Blast targeting Israeli Ambassador near King Hussein Bridge

A bomb has exploded Thursday evening near a car carrying Israeli diplomats in Jordan, without causing injuries.

The incident occurred on the Na'our-Dead Sea road close to the King Hussein Bridge that links Jordan and the Israeli occupied Palestinian West Bank.

Sources told 'Ammon News' that two two bombs were planted on the right side of the road leading to the bridge as the Israeli convoy was en route.

CNN reported that the blast targeted the Israeli ambassador to Jordan, Dani Nevo, but Israeli sources said that the ambassador wasn't among the diplomats in the vehicle.

AFP, on the other hand, noted that the current ambassador was in one of the vehicles but was reportedly unharmed.

Al Jazeera's Nisreen al-Shamyleh, in Amman, said: "This took place on the King Hussein Bridge, also called Allenby in Israel, on the Jordanian side.

"We still have yet to confirm this with the authorities, but the information we have right now is saying that the explosion targeted the car that was carrying the Israeli ambassador to Israel."

Al-Shamyleh said that it was unknown what kind of explosives or bomb was used as yet.

Haaretz reported on its website that no injuries were reported from the explosion, which it described as a "an anticipated terrorist attack."

The convoy contained four embassy employees and two security guards on their way to Israel, Ynet News reported, adding that "It is suspected that the incident was planned in advance by elements familiar with the embassy's routine work procedures."

"We are checking and not commenting for now," a spokesman for Israel's Foreign Ministry said.

Minister of Media Affairs and government spokesman Nabil Sharif confirmed the incident, adding in a statement to Jordan News Agency that no one was hurt in the incident.

Jordanian troops arrived at the site of the attack immediately after the blast, and authorities have launched an investigation, he added.

Israeli media reported that Jordanian forces accompanied the Israeli diplomats to a nearby military base and later escorted them to the Israeli border, following initial assistance and a brief questioning session. The Israeli convoy is now making its way to Jerusalem.
